Is Sucralose Bad For Your Health?

My last couple of blogs has been on Spark energy drink and the reason for this article.  I have had people turn up their nose at Spark because it contains an artificial sweetener called Sucralose.  Being a pharmacist I really could not just let that pass me by without doing a little research myself.

I first performed a Google search on Sucralose and found many, many sites stating negative things concerning Sucralose.  One thing I noticed about these sites was the fact that not a one referenced to a study that stated that Sucralose was harmful to humans, much less any peer reviewed medical journals!  When you see that has a health professional, you really have to question their credibility.  Where did they get their information?

Now!  Bare with me on this, this post may be a little longer.  I think it will be worth your time to read.  I first want you to click on this link so you can view what AdvoCare says concerning the safety of Sucralose.  This article confirmed what I already had discovered!  It also encouraged me to dig a little deeper!  I even have a few surprises for you.  You can’t tell that I am enjoying this can you?

View these sites and articles from these different sources and see for yourself and judge for yourself.  See what the FDA says about Sucralose in its statements.  The Int. J. Morphol. has an article on the toxicity of Sucralose in humans that shows there is no health risk to humans from Sucralose.

These next two are form sources that are a watchdog for the public’s best interest concerning food safety.  You will find this a little surprising, or maybe not.  The first is the Center For Science In The Public Interest’s post on food safety rating.  The next is the Nutrition Action Health Letter that does the same thing by rating food safety.

Do you think the FDA, for which its sole purpose is to protect the public against harmful tactics used by companies skirting safe practices?  That is why so many people outside the US want our products.  Do you think some of these advocacy groups are going to put the very people they are trying to protect at risk by their recommendations in stating that Sucralose is safe?

I have heard someone say that there is a conspiracy to keep Sucralose on the market.  Please!  The major health risk in the United States is the astronomical amount of sugars that are consumed in all its forms, which is causing obesity in our children!  You wonder why we have diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.  Don’t get me started!

Okay, now let us look at a study that many people will point to for the arguments against Sucralose.  The Duke University did a study that found that Sucralose decreased the intestinal flora by 50%, increased fecal PH and interfered with enzymes that affect the bioavailability of drugs.  An expert panel reviewed this study and came to the conclusion that the study was deficient in several areas and was critical of the study.  You can read this from the Food Navigator’s website.

Now I want to address those that say they do not want to take anything artificial.  Really!  Do these people take prescription drugs or any over the counter medication?  Have they ever thought that all prescription drugs are synthetically made in a laboratory with only a few exceptions!  Drug manufactures cannot patent a drug if it is not tweaked in the lab.

Sucralose is from table sugar, which is sucrose.  It has 3 molecules of chlorine added which helps it to be sweeter and also non-absorbable.  Chlorine is a natural component of hydrochloric acid in the stomach.  Do you know how much Chlorine is in tap water?  You probably consumed more Chlorine as a child from all the swimming in public swimming pools than what you will consume for the rest of your life using products sweetened with Sucralose!

The bottom line is this.  If all the different government regulatory bodies say it is safe along with advocacy groups, then it is okay with me.  Besides, I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Gastroparesis, which is delayed gastric emptying.  This has caused me some difficulty on a couple of mission trips mind you!  However, since taking Spark and other products from AdvoCare, I have not had any problems with either condition!  AdvoCare cannot say their products help those conditions, but you cannot tell me they didn’t!  Everything is better for me, my digestion and bowel movements.  That is probably more information than what you wanted, but I feel you need to know the truth!  Besides, I now have energy to exercise, which is a huge factor contributing to better health. Should I or should I not Spark.  Give me my Spark!

    Craig: So glad you are using AdvoCare products. George and I connected with the company in January and started focusing on the business opportunity in late Feb. He has had really good reports from his diabetic physician and his podiatrist. We love Spark. It has already made a difference in our life, too. I have lost about 22 lbs and we are both looking at less pant sizes x3 (LOL) by August. Love your blog. May I share it with others? We miss you guys a whole bunch.

    I too have Gastroparesis and IBS. My main concern with Advocare has been their use of sucralose and maltodextrin. Thank you for making this issue a little clearer:) If you don’t mind me asking, which products were you able to use?

      Hi Mary! I have used every product by AdvoCare and have not had any problems with anything. I use Spark on a daily basis. I do not have any problems with my delayed emptying as long as I eat right and get regular exercise.

    It is always refreshing to read an article that starts out so unbiased, and factual, coming from someone in the medical field. I was thoroughly invested in your opinion, until you made a marketing plug for a company in the conclusion. I understand the evidence, but you cannot say that all studies that show harmful effects of sucralose are false. The FDA approved it in quantities. Now I don’t take Spark, so I do not know the quantity. Just adding a side note to your facts.

      Agreed. Also, there are many products approved by the FDA that have been shown to be unsafe and are banned in other countries.

        Sorry, it posted before I was done. People think the FDA conducts its own testing which isn’t the case. The very companies that are seeking FDA approval to put a new item on the market are the same ones responsible running the research studies. That’s pretty biased in my opinion. Every once in awhile we get lucky and a university or medical researcher gets interested in a substances and funding is secured for a study, but that doesn’t happen often…

        I for one choose not to consume “food like” products although I understand why some people feel the need to use zero calorie sweeteners. There is no reason to use them if one just sticks to whole foods and practices moderation, but not everyone is able to do that.

          Jackie, I cannot agree more. Moderation is the problem. No one knows when to stop. Our culture is so addicted to the sweet taste. It is cheap and we can buy and consume as much as our little heart desires. Thanks for the comment.
